Review: Choosing You by Allie Everhart

Hi all!

Something for the weekend!

Title: Choosing You
Series: Jade #1
Release date: 21st of September 2013
Reading level: FICTION – ADULT: New adult, Contemporary, Romance
Published by: Waltham Publishing
Pages: 294 pages in Kindle e-book format
Source: Bought from Amazon.com for Kindle

Summary:

When Jade is given a scholarship to an elite private college in Connecticut, she sees it as a chance to finally escape her painful past and get a fresh start. She’s determined to succeed and that means keeping her focus on school and not guys. But that plan falls apart her first day on campus when Garret, a wealthy prep school boy with swimmer abs and a perfect smile, offers to help her move in.

Jade tries to push him away but she can’t deny her attraction to him and Garret won’t let her. Things quickly heat up between them, but then come to a sudden halt when reality hits and Jade realizes that a relationship with Garret may never be possible. He comes from a world of wealth where there are rules, including rules about who he can date. And not following those rules has consequences.

As the two of them try to overcome the obstacles working to keep them apart, Jade is confronted with another challenge. On her 19th birthday, she receives a letter that her now deceased mother wrote years ago. In it are revelations that explain her traumatic childhood but also make her question the past she’s been running from.

Review:

I confess that I have a fondness for the cliché and overused lame rich boy/poor girl trope in my romance. Yes, it’s cheesy and stupid, but I can’t help it. So, overall, because of this I took up this book and it’s a cute read, but also has some parts that I’m not really over the moon about.

Let’s start with the heroine Jade. She didn’t really speak to me much because she was simply too, well, jaded (bad pun). It was difficult to warm up to her and I sincerely hope she gets better and isn’t such a pile of distrusting disillusioned misery anymore.

I also wasn’t too wild about the way the pace was handled at the end and the mayor cliffhanger. The overall pace was nice and reasonable, but suddenly in the end it picked up tenfold and it was like BAM, the plot arrived. Beforehand, I could guess that something fishy was going on with the scholarship, but I didn’t really get a confirmation.

Also, it’s not really only the issue of this book, but so many new adult books seem to suffer under this. Why are all girls apart from the heroine so incredibly superficial and bitchy? Ok, there was one friendly girl, but all others were basically slutty bimbos. Ok, it had to be said.

I did like, however, how the relationship between Jade and Garret developed and wasn’t rushed. The focus of the book was almost entirely to build up their connection and it flowed smoothly, sweetly and believably. They spent a lot of time together doing various things, going to various places and simply got to know each other. There was also some spice to them and it was displayed by the sarcasm, teasing and banter they had going on. So I was grateful it wasn’t all mushy sap.

The whole mystery surrounding Jade and the whats, whys and whos was quite interesting and I predict the future conflicts and revelations will probably be emotional, dangerous and hard on the couple. I, however, can’t wait to get to the bottom of everything. It seems that Garret’s family has some skeletons in the closet as well and there were already intriguing hints given. Any answers are fine, but please don’t let them go through the OMG-we-might-be-siblings trope! I don’t even have any basis for this, but for some reason this came to mind. Maybe I’m totally barking up the wrong tree, but you never know.

Characters:

As already mentioned, Jade wasn’t a heroine to my liking. She had some bright moments and I liked her conversations with Garret, but overall, she simply wasn’t likable. I am, however, quite excited on how her family history mystery (rhyme!) gets solved and what becomes of her.

Garret was rich and privileged, but didn’t have the douchey factor that usually comes with that and all the overconfidence and ego. He came across as a decent guy and though he made mistakes, he tried to do the right thing and was basically, well, quite likable. Nevertheless, he was slightly boring, having not much take him apart from other such heroes. But again, I’d like to follow on where he ends up with and I predict it will be a difficult road for him and Jade both.

Overall:

There are parts that I enjoyed reading about and which will have me pick up the next books in the series, but as always, there were things I didn’t really like that much. Luckily, the good outweighed the not so good, so I should get on with the second book. It’s an ok new adult story that I think will only continue to get better in the upcoming books.

3 stars!

Review of World After by Susan Ee - 5 stars!

Happy Thursday!

Few days ago, I saw a book in amazon, which I have waited for very long time, just to realize, it came out already in November last year. I have no idea how I've missed that. So, to correct my own wrong, I purchased it and read it immediately.

I am talking about World After by Susan Ee. I loved Angelfall, which is the first book in the Penryn and the End of Days Series and to rush ahead, I also loved World After. Here is the review.

Author: Susan Ee
Title: World After
Series: Penryn and the End of Days, book #2
Imprint: Hodder & Stoughton
Publisher: Hachette Book Group
Publishing date: 19th of November 2013
Pages: 360 pages in paperback
Genre: YA: Paranormal, Fantasy, Thriller, Dystopian, Romance, Science-Fiction
Source: Purchased from amazon

Summary:

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world. When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige.
Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans, where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

My review:

World After is a terrifying and amazing page turner.
This one sentence describes it all and then again, it describes way too little.

I am totally freaked out and in love with the world that Susan Ee has created. I wouldn't want to live in it, but it is strikingly thrilling and horrifying and fascinating. As I was with Angelfall, I still am in love with the idea of the angels destroying the world. Usually in the world of literature, angels are seen mostly as good creatures with some exceptions of few fallen ones, but in Penryn and the End of Days books, angels are as bad as you can get them. I think it is awesome!

The best part of it is, that it is still unknown WHY the angels are destroying the earth. The author gives some light to it during the World After, but not nearly enough to see the big picture. The author keeps you guessing, giving not much away.  You see glimpses of angel politics, bad planning and get the understanding of dirty angel politics, but it's like teasing - the tension is building and I think it will keep building until couple of more books in the series are out. Honestly, I can't wait!

When Angelfall could not in my opinion be described as a thriller, then World After definitely can! The creatures you meet, the horrifying scenes you are getting from the bloody torture of humans, the scientific experiments and gene mutations on humans - all of the before mentioned proves, that Susan Ee can write and combine different genres like it was a walk in the park. And what an imagination she has! It is actually spooky because what I thought started out as a YA series, I am not so sure anymore if it can be called YA. There is nothing YA readers can't read in there, but the world, which you see and experience in Susan's books, I bet it can give some younger readers with weaker nerves some serious thrills. It's dark, it's horrifying and yet, it's utterly unique and amazingly written world.

Susan Ee's writing style is rare. World After is written from Penryn's point of view which is quite descriptive, but never boring. I loved that we get to know Raffe little better and the fun part of it is, that the author tells more about Raffe through his sword. I think it was a brilliant way of doing it! Besides that, there is not a lot of dialogue, but the dialogue you see in the book, is great! It's funny and feisty and it gives you good laughs.

Plot:

World After pick up right there where Angelfall ends. I don't want to give much away what happens in the book, so very briefly:
Penryn survives the attack from the scorpion monsters and Raffe thinks she is dead. Penryn is brought to the Resistane together with her mom and Paige, but since Paige is changed, they can't stay for long. Paige takes off and Penryn needs to find her sister... again. Her journey takes her to Alcatraz and towards the end of the book she meets Raffe again.

Be prepared to lots of surprises in the plot! There is nothing obvious in this book.

Characters:

My favorite new character - Pooky Bear! You will need to read the book to understand why Pooky Bear won my heart. I loved that Raffe's sword is teaching Penryn more about how to fight and also gives Penryn deeper insight into Raffe. The sword is a story-teller and I have to admit, without these stories shown by the sword, I would have missed Raffe terribly. Yay for Pooky Bear!

I keep admiring Penryn and I think she is one of my all time favorite YA heroines in the world! She is brave, selfless, smart and never loses hope. Her love for her family and survival are driving her and she is fearless!

I enjoyed that Raffe continued to fight for his angel wings. As mentioned earlier, I was happy to read all the chapters about the sword showing Raffe's softer side. Raffe has a very explicit understanding what is right or wrong and in this novel I got a better understanding of how he looks to the Angel and Daughter of Man relationship. You see his history, his pain, his bravery - all things which I really really loved. Raffe is THE angel for me. I am looking very much forward to see how the author is solving the relationship between Raffe and Penryn. I keep rooting for these two!

I was very happy about Paige getting more coverage because I had a feeling she will have a very special role in the series and after finishing World After, it seems, that I am right! Paige doesn't say a lot in this book, as far as I can remember she has one line in the dialogue. But she does a lot instead. She does not need to speak, her actions speak for herself and also often for others. I was heartbroken when reading the scenes with Paige and Beliel in Alcatraz. Luckily, she gets her say - and that is more than I expected.

Favorite quotes:

"Don't talk. You'll just spoil my fantasy of rescuing an innocent damsel in distress as soon as you open your mouth." - Raffe to Penryn
"Bow down to me Pooky Bear, who has only two other equals in all the worlds." Raffe about the sword to Penryn

It might not seem funny, but I burst out laughing when reading them. you need to read these quotes in the real book context and you will get it!

Generally:

Loved it. I absolutely LOVED this book. It was dark, thrilling and beautiful! If you haven't started the series yet, then honestly, do it now!

5 Flowers!
5 stars.

I hope, that you will pick up the series...
Happy reading!

Curses, Fates & Soul Mates - Interview with Kristie Cook, Lynn Rush, R.K. Ryals, Raine Thomas and Rachael Wade! Meet 5 authors and their books!

Happy Sunday!

Tomorrow is the release day for Curses, Fates & Soul Mates box set.

Curses, Fates & Soul Mates box set features 5 books, which will be released on February 17th: The Space Between by Kristie Cook, Frostbite by Lynn Rush, Cursed by R.K. Ryals, Return of the Ascendant by Raine Thomas and Repossession by Rachael Wade.

I had an opportunity to make a short interview with the authors. Enjoy!

How did you meet each other?

We pretty much met each other on Facebook and Twitter. As for in-person meets, Kristie and R.K. met at the RT Booklovers Convention last year, and Kristie, Raine and Rachael sat on panels together at the Indie BookFest in Orlando last year. Raine and Rachael have actually been at numerous events together. Lynn is waaaay over on the other side of the country – LOL – so we haven’t had a chance to meet her in person yet. We all hope to remedy that in the near future!

What was behind the idea to release the box set? Why exactly you 5 and exactly these books?

Kristie: I’ll answer this! I’d been thinking about doing a project like this for a couple of months when Lynn reached out to me and asked if I was interested. I was all, “Heck, yeah!” We both wanted to promote New Adult genre fiction so readers and the public can see that there are so many New Adult options out there beyond contemporary romance. The two of us brainstormed authors we know who met certain criteria: 1) Obviously, they needed to write New Adult paranormal; 2) They needed to be indie, at least for this book because they needed to have their rights; 3) They needed to have at least some kind of platform so they could bring their readership to the box set (which also shows that they’re experienced and serious about their writing career); and 4) We liked them because we knew this would be a team effort. J We reached out to Raine, R.K., and Rachael, and they all jumped on board.

How did you come up with the name of the box set - Curses, Fates & Soul Mates?

We wanted a short, simple title that covered as much as possible. We did a lot of brainstorming and loved how Curses, Fates & Soul Mates covered all of our books in some capacity and was also catchy.

What do you think are the advantages of releasing a box set, besides the price?

We want to reach more readers! We’re expanding our reach not only with each other’s audiences, but also by creating a convenient way readers can discover all of us. I mean, they get 5 new-to-them books and authors for less than the cost of most single titles! Since all of the included books are firsts-in-series, we’re hoping people will go on to read our other books, too.

I have always been curious how the working process behind releasing a box set is? Who was responsible for which task? How did the process look like?

Everyone has been great about chipping in. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and things we like to do and things we don’t. For example, Kristie and Chrissi (her business partner/publisher) took on the formatting and uploading to the different retailers because they have tons of experience there and great contacts. Kristie’s background is marketing, so she created a marketing plan. Lynn is our Twitter and online party expert, so she took the reins with organizing those. R.K. and her assistant Christina (who’s also a blogger) has taken charge of reaching out to bloggers. Rachael spearheaded the cover design and Raine took on writing the promotional blurb and fleshing out the copyright. When something needs to be done, we always have someone jumping in and taking care of it. We couldn’t have asked for better teammates!

Briefly, what are your books about?

THE SPACE BETWEEN by Kristie Cook: Self-contained dancer Leni Drago and inked-and-pierced playboy Jeric Winters must discover the truth behind their connection as well as their ties to a journal from 1989 – and they must do it fast, before all evidence that they ever existed disappears. Two love stories, one mystery and a paranormal twist that readers call “mind blowing.”

FROSTBITE by Lynn Rush: Love is warm and fuzzy for most people, and it would be for eighteen-year-old Amanda Smith, too, if her kisses didn't cause frostbite.

CURSED by R.K. Ryals: Sometimes being bad is better… A vintage-loving witch. A cocky demon. An old grimoire. An ancient curse. A family secret that changes everything.

RETURN OF THE ASCENDANT by Raine Thomas: Party plans derail for college student Kyra Vaughn when she’s nearly killed…twice. She’ll have to rely on a sexy stranger with unusual abilities to keep her alive and help her discover who she’s destined to be.

REPOSSESSION by Rachael Wade: The Invaders have come for Earth, and Skylla Warden’s in the very center of the upheaval. On a mission to take back what is rightfully theirs, Earth’s population is determined to make sure this isn’t the end. But some endings were never theirs to begin with.

How do you market the box set? Any events planned readers should know about?

We’re going with a multi-pronged approach, trying to cover all major marketing avenues. We all have newsletters, street teams and blogs, so we’ve been promoting pre-order links through those platforms as well as on our social media pages. We’ve created a Facebook group called Souls of Indie, where we’re cultivating a fellowship of paranormal readers that we hope to grow over time. There are Facebook and Twitter parties scheduled between 2/14 and release day (2/17) with lots of reader interaction and fun giveaways. And we’re also advertising in a few key places to help get the word out.

Why should a reader want to purchase Curse, Fates & Soul Mates?

This box set is an opportunity for readers who enjoy Paranormal New Adult Romance to fall in love with new authors and characters that will grab their hearts and not let go. Every author in the set takes pride in her writing and has earned numerous accolades, so readers are assured of five great books. With an introductory price of 99 cents, you can’t go wrong!

Thank you!

The Space Between Summary

When Life Falls to Pieces, Answers Lie in the Space Between

Leni Drago can't make a smart decision on her own, according to her mother anyway--the few times she's tried resulted in disaster. When her uncle sends her on a dance tour in Italy to find her real self, she returns to an empty home and any evidence of his existence wiped out. Then things get even stranger, like the mysterious appearances of Jeric Winters--inked, pierced and a hit-'em-and-quit-'em type. He's one decision that should be easy for Leni. Or is he?

Jeric doesn't do girlfriends. Unless they're someone else's. He left the fighting cage and modeling for a reason, and girls who want more than a night of fun are distractions he doesn't need. Especially when they come with as much baggage as Leni carries. But he can't shake the gut feeling that he needs to know her. All of her.

To discover the truth behind their connection and their ties to a journal from 1989, they must face painful secrets from their pasts. And they must do so quickly because their own existences are falling to pieces.

This first part of The Book of Phoenix takes you on a heart-wrenching ride as you discover the answers that lie in The Space Between.

Frostbite Summary

Amanda gives a whole new meaning to cool...

Amanda Smith is sick of getting chased from town-to-town. So when she lands in tiny Trifle, Arizona, she hopes it's her last move for a long time. Despite hating the smallness of the town, she settles in and finds a best friend, and even a boyfriend. Normality at its finest.

But for a girl who can shoot snow from her hands and lift a two-ton truck over her head like a bag of feathers--normal is not an option.

The scientists who murdered her mother come barreling into Amanda's quiet life. She must decide if she'll run again or stay and fight. The price of either choice might be her life or the lives of those she's come to love...

Cursed Summary

A grimoire. A witch. A Demon.

Ellie Elizabeth Jacobs, often known as Monroe due to her fascination with vintage attire and old movies, is an 18 year-old witch and a darned good one! But there is also something very wrong with her. Demonic energy makes her powers stronger, she has the ability to ward off Demons, and Lucifer wants her.

Sometimes being bad is better. Or at least that's how Luther "Thorne" Craig feels. The hybrid Demon son of the cursed Cain and the Demon Lilith, Luther is reluctantly sent to New Orleans, Louisiana by his brother, the hybrid Demon ruler of the Outer Levels of Hell, to protect Monroe from Lucifer's searching Hellhounds.

But what happens when things go wrong?

In this riveting spin off from R.K. Ryals' Redemption series, Monroe is faced with an old grimoire, an ancient curse, and a journey to discover a family secret that may surprise them all.

Repossession Summary

Skylla only knows that she has been kidnapped and held prisoner by the foreign invaders and their human allies. And that the world is ending. Or so the humans think. The invaders have made it clear that their arrival is one of hostile intent, and as their takeover spreads, so does the panic across the globe. No one knows how to defeat them, or if it’s even sane to try.

Jet, Skylla’s human captor, is up for the challenge, though. A traitor in Skylla’s eyes, he is working with them. But Jet has his own agenda; one that doesn’t include babysitting Skylla or helping the enemies. And as the human race struggles to keep the invaders from achieving their goal, Jet and Skylla’s paths collide to reveal the truth behind Skylla’s abduction.

The invaders are headed for the water. Jet is headed for the water. But that’s the last place Skylla wants to be. That’s where the future of humanity lies, and where the bridge to their yesterdays was burned. On a mission to take back what is rightfully theirs, Earth’s population is determined to make sure this isn’t the end. But some endings were never theirs to begin with.

About Raine Thomas

Raine Thomas is the award-winning author of bestselling Young Adult and New Adult fiction. Raine is a hopeless romantic with a background in the fields of mental health and wedding planning...two areas that intersect far more than one would think.
