Review of Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris - 3 stars.

Happy Sunday!

I was very excited to read Dead Ever After - the last book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. After seeing so many disappointed reviews, I was little afraid to read it. Anyway, here is the review.

Author: Charlaine Harris
Title: Dead Ever After
Series: Sookie Stackhouse Series #13
Imprint: Ace Hardcover
Publisher: Penguin Group
Genre: Adult: Fantasy, Paranormal, Contemporary, Mystery
Pages: 352 pages
Source: Purchased from amazon.com

Summary:

There are secrets in the town of Bon Temps, ones that threaten those closest to Sookie—and could destroy her heart....
Sookie Stackhouse finds it easy to turn down the request of former barmaid Arlene when she wants her job back at Merlotte’s. After all, Arlene tried to have Sookie killed. But her relationship with Eric Northman is not so clearcut. He and his vampires are keeping their distance…and a cold silence. And when Sookie learns the reason why, she is devastated.

Then a shocking murder rocks Bon Temps, and Sookie is arrested for the crime.

But the evidence against Sookie is weak, and she makes bail. Investigating the killing, she’ll learn that what passes for truth in Bon Temps is only a convenient lie. What passes for justice is more spilled blood. And what passes for love is never enough…

My review:

Dead Ever After is the final installment of one of my favorite book series ever. I was very excited to see how Sookie's story was ending and I have to admit, that after finished the last book, I still have mixed feelings. I finished reading it in May already and I think it was wise to let it all settle before writing a review about it.

Dead Ever After is well written and it continues the tradition of Charlaine Harris' amazing writing- and storytelling skills. However, I was disappointed and the reason behind my disappointment is easy - I did not like the fact how the author decided to end the series. With that said, I know it's not the author's problem, but my own, because after all, she is the one who created it and has a right to end her story how she likes. This dilemma is also why I decided to wait with the review, otherwise it would have been very emotional.

Plot:

Sookie finds herself in a complicated situation. Arlene is back and trying to get her old job back at Merlotte's. Arlene is found dead and all the evidence is pointing towards Sookie. Besides that, already estranged relationship with Eric is getting very complicate and odd because Eric has been promised away to a Vampire Queen to be married. Yes, you got that right! That's shortly about the plot.

What I disliked:

What was different about Dead Ever After is, that the book is written from multiple point of views and that disturbed me. It was unusual to read somebody else's thoughts but Sookie's.

Sookie seemed off. I do understand, that Sookie is tired of the supernatural creatures after all what she has been through and that she needs some stability and normality in her life, but her sassyness was gone. It seemed, that she simply gave up or that she was put into the circumstances when it was easier to not fight for and I did not like that.

I did not like what happened to Eric and I missed Sookie's and Eric's relationship. Even though I understand the logic and way of thinking behind why these two could not be together, I would have wanted their breakup being different. Eric's character has through the series built up for a different departure, I honestly have difficulties of believing, that he would leave Sookie without a proper goodbye.

I also did not like how Eric ended up with, it was not only sad, but cruel. As said, I get the idea of these two not being together, but the ending of Eric's and Sookie's love story could have been much different and I have difficulties of understanding, why the author chose the way she did. It did not fit with the rest of the story.

What I liked:

I think it was awesome to meet so many characters from previous books and I think the author did an excellent job with waving them into the final book. I was happy to see all of Sookie's friends gathering for one last time to support the heroine of the series. It was heart-warming and brilliant move from the author.

I liked how Sookie re-bonded with Tara and how Sookie understood the need of her own family and children.

I still think, that Charlaine Harris is a great writer with an awesome writing style which I have enjoyed for a long time and I have loved the world she created in the Sookie Stackhouse Series! The end of the series gives the bittersweet feeling because I loved the series, but I did not like the ending.

Generally:

Read it! It's not my favorite book in the series, far from it, but it gave me a good reading experience and it wraps up the whole series and in case you have read all the other books in the series, I recommend to read Dead Ever After as well.

5 Flowers!
3 stars.

 Happy reading!

  1. My thoughts exactly. I was very much looking forward to this book, as I have been following the story for years. I was extremely disappointed. Eric has grown so much through the series, and has grown to love Sookie. In this last book she made it seem that he really didn't care for her and would rather have wealth and power. It just didn't fit. I never really saw her ending up with Sam because they really didn't have any chemistry through the whole series, and them ending up together just felt...wrong. I love this series, just wish it would have ended differently, and to me it felt really rushed.

  3. I agree. I would even go further and say that I would be more satisfied if she would kill Eric off. I would have cried and been sad, but this.... Not good. It was flat and not very believable.

  4. I'm not gonna lie, I totally looked up the spoilers for this one because if she would have ended up with Vampire Bill I would have stayed far far away.

Sorry it wasn't a great read, but I feel like the last 4 books or so have been slipping anyway so I'm not surprised. I def plan to read it to find out how it finishes, plus I want to know what you are talking about about Eric. I love him!
