Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Riley Meemick is one of the world's last free girls. When Riley was born, her mother escaped the Breeders, the group of doctors using cruel experiments to bolster the dwindling human race. Her parents do everything possible to keep her from their clutches-- moving from one desolate farm after another to escape the Breeders' long reach. The Breeders control everything- the local war lords, the remaining factories, the fuel. They have unchecked power in this lawless society. And they're hunting Riley.

When the local Sheriff abducts the adult members of her family and hands her mother over to the Breeders, Riley and her eight-year-old brother, Ethan, hiding in a shelter, are left to starve. Then Clay arrives, the handsome gunslinger who seems determined to help to make up for past sins. The problem is Clay thinks Riley is a bender-- a genderless mutation, neither male nor female. As Riley's affection for Clay grows she wonders can she trust Clay with her secret and risk her freedom?

The three embark on a journey across the scarred remains of New Mexico-- escaping the Riders who use human sacrifice to appease their Good Mother, various men scrambling for luck, and a deranged lone survivor of a plague. When Riley is shot and forced into the Breeder's hospital, she learns the horrible fate of her mother—a fate she'll share unless she can find a way out.

My review:

I absolutely loved this book! It is one of the most interesting dystopian young adult books I've read. I enjoyed the idea of the book, the narrative and the characters!

Plot:

Meet Riley, a girl who is one of the last living free girls in the world. And she is hunted, because The Breeders want her. The Breeders control the society and will do anything to get to Riley, because this is what The Breeders do, they make sure, that girls and women are used to ensure that the human race is surviving and they don't choose any means to get what they want.

Riley's family has been capable of hiding and protecting Riley from The Breeders' reach, but one day everything changes - Riley's mother is taken by The Breeders and now Riley needs to survive and escape together with her brother.

When Riley meets Clay, her world is turned upside down.

I absolutely loved the plot! I think, that the idea of having a society where someone decides when and how a woman should be used for breeding, is scary and fascinating at the same time. It changes the definition of love, and that itself is an interesting thought.  The author's point of view was provoking and I really wanted to know how she develops the story. The story grabbed me from the first page and not only kept my attention, it also increased my curiosity while reading.

Characters:

I enjoyed Riley. She was a true survivor, who was brave, who never gave up and I don't think I heard her complaining once! I have grown mildly said tired of YA heroines who constantly whine and complain, so Riley was like a refreshing sea-breeze in the desert. I loved her for that!

Clay was a character who kept surprising me most. Just when I though I knew what he was about, he did something which was totally unexpected! His character challenged me more than once and I am only grateful for that. He has a very loving and caring side, but he could also be tough.

I loved how the author developed the romance in the story. It lured in the background until you felt that hey, it's here and it's awesome! The dynamics between Riley and Clay was perfectly written!

Generally:

The Breeders by Katie French is filled with great characters and the plot... Let's just say, that it keeps you thinking and wondering for much longer time than it took to read it!!! You don't want to miss this one, trust me! I highly recommend it!

About the author:

Currently she is a school counselor, doing a job that is both one of the hardest things she's ever done and the most rewarding. In her free time she writes, reads great books and takes care of her two beautiful and crazy children.
