Their arrival on the island elicits an eerie episode of déjà vu for Alex, and he begins to wonder about the pamphlet and his father's past. Why did he have it? Had he been there before? Alex senses something is off with the island. Progress is unwelcome by the inhabitants. A local girl reveals the history of the island and its dark spirits. She warns him to never be caught outside after dark, but Alex finds it all hard to believe... Until inexplicable and terrifying events begin to unfold. While digging for information, Alex finds his presence on the haunted island is not by chance. Rangur, the most evil of souls, aims to use him to acquire great power. There's only one way Alex can stop him and for that he must uncover his father's past connection to the island.

Excerpt for Souls of Darkness

Hanu was still knocking on the shack's door when it swung open and Butler jumped out from behind it. "Is it true there are tourists on the island?"

Hanu started. "You can't do that to an old man. My heart will stop."

Butler's brown eyes were loaded with guilt. He looked paler than usual. His 1790s style long coat and short pants were still impeccable, as was his stiff British posture. Only his eyes and trembling voice gave away his emotions.

"Is it true?"

"A mother and son."

Butler's face twisted in anger. "How could you allow them onto the island?"

"I am only a healer, not the boss. I do not know why Verner rented out the house this time of year."

"People respect you. They listen to you."

"Not foreigners. Why so concerned?" Hanu said.

"I think Rangur intends to kill them, if I do not tell him where the dagger is."

Hanu frowned as he watched Butler pace. "He's made threats before."

"No, this time… it was no empty threat. He said the boy has the power to see, and a tie to the island's past."

Past. Hanu now understood Butler's despair. The past forever haunted him. "He might be lying."

"And if he's not?" Butler yelled inches from Hanu's face.

If Butler had been alive, Hanu would have been sprayed with spit.

"The boy doesn't know these powers could be his death sentence." Butler turned away. "Who brought him here? Someone brought him here. Someone is doing Rangur's bidding. You must get them out to the Cook Islands."

"I cannot force them to go… but I can try," Hanu added, seeing the despair on Butler's face. "We still have nine days. Much can happen." Hanu looked around the shack. "How is the story?"

Butler shrugged. "Nowhere near finished. Elizabeth is leaving for Paris. A beautiful chariot is coming for her." Butler's eyes took on the faraway look.

"You have to let her go. Writing beautiful stories with happy endings won't change the past."

"Giving her a beautiful life is all that keeps me sane. I give the others beautiful lives as well… I give them back what I cost them…." he took in a deep breath.

"You don't give them anything because they are dead."

Butler ignored him.

Hanu opened his sack. "I brought more pouches…to reinforce."

"Gabe seemed ruffled."

"I don't know why. He only came to give me your message." Hanu took out the rectangular cloth pouches filled with herbs from his sack. He went around the shack, hanging them from the hooks on the walls and over the windows, already containing pouches. "You know how to stop him." Hanu headed for the door without waiting for Butler's reply. He always made this same statement at the end of every visit, hoping that one day Butler would give in.

It wouldn't be this time, Hanu realized, as he looked back to find Butler glaring at him. Bang came the door.
