The Formula for Character Chemistry
by LM Preston, www.lmpreston.com

Have you ever read a book and when you finished missed the characters? Or better yet, fell in love while you were reading how a character was falling head over heels in love with another character.

Well creating chemistry in your novel can be with anything:

- Between the reader and the character

- Between multiple characters

- Between the scenery or scene (that you make a connection to)

Reader and Character Love

While writing my latest release, Purgatory Reign, I really worked hard at making the character believable, flawed, but possessing redeemable core traits. Writing in a close third person allowed me the freedom to explore other characters and give them a bit of depth into understanding their motivation.

Have you ever had a friend tell you some juicy news, gossip or prediction that you couldn't stop listening to because they told the story in such a way that captivated you? Well that's the frame of mind you as the writer need to be in when you are creating your  characters, even minor characters should have depth. You want to reveal what makes the character tick, get a strong voice, and slowly seduce your reader into falling in love with your character - flaws and all.

Characters Chemistry with Each Other

Reading a scene where two characters have sparks firing off can bring the reader right into the action by the use of senses and bringing believability and substance to the relationship. This is a writing trick that romance writers have a talent for. To get your writing in the chemistry zone think about what makes you connect with other people, falling in love, 'click' in a friendship. Those tools should be used to develop and unfold to bring substance to these on paper relationships. The key is to make the reader connect with each character, fall in love with them, before you make the characters realize their love or connection to one another.

Yes, A SCENE or a PLACE, can invoke chemistry

I would've never thought this until I started reading travel books. Not the books that tell you how to visit a place, but the ones that show you how to EXPERIENCE a place. These travel books and authors have a give for bringing a place alive, creating chemistry between the reader and the local of choice to the point where the reader falls in love with a place simply based on the way its experienced through the writing.

Chemistry takes time to build up when writing, and the best place to figure out how to express it is to figure out what causes your chemistry to spark.

LM Preston

LM. Preston was born and raised in Washington, DC. An avid reader, she loved to create poetry and short-stories as a young girl. With a thirst for knowledge she attended college at Bowie State University, and worked in the IT field as a Techie and Educator for over sixteen years. She started writing science fiction under the encouragement of her husband who was a Sci-Fi buff and her four kids. Her first published novel, Explorer X - Alpha was the beginning of her obsessive desire to write and create stories of young people who overcome unbelievable odds. She loves to write while on the porch watching her kids play or when she is traveling, which is another passion that encouraged her writing.

Excerpt:

A sickening thump made Peter jerk around. His face crinkled with
fury. The car threw the sparse girl’s body upwards into the air, and sped
off down the street. She bounced several times on the pavement. Peter ran
and knelt beside her. Blood dribbled from her lip. And he felt like gar-
bage, being the cause of her injury.
She smiled at him. “Petah. I…knew you would come.” Her dazed
eyes never left his face. “Take me home, Petah.”
He shook his head and searched around. Surprised the street was now
deserted. Tendrils of guilt filled his chest. Another one…my damn fault.
My fault.
