Summary:

When Val Jensen gets dumped for her decision to stay a virgin until marriage, the nasty breakup goes viral on YouTube, making her the latest internet sensation.

After days of ridicule from her peers, Val starts a school-wide campaign to rally support for her cause. She meant to make a statement, but she never dreamed the entire nation would get caught up in the controversy.

As if becoming nationally recognized as “Virgin Val” isn’t enough, Val’s already hectic life starts to spin wildly out of control when bad boy Kyle Hamilton, lead singer for the hit rock band Tralse, decides to take her abstinence as a personal challenge.

How can a girl stay true to herself when this year’s Sexiest Man Alive is doing everything in his power to win her over?

My review:

V is for Virgin is a first book by Kelly Oram I have read and I enjoyed it a lot. It was well written, had memorable characters, had funny dialogue and touched issues which are important for young people.

Val is a girl who wants to keep her virginity for the man she marries. When she is dumped by her boyfriend for not wanting to have sex, she is heartbroken. She accidentally declares that she is virgin and that statement is recorded and goes over the world wide web.

What I liked about V is for Virgin is that the author touches a conservative point of view to sex in a very contemporary world. A lot of things are turned into sex today and Kelly Oram is making young readers to question if it is necessary to have sex when you are very young and that it is OK to wait with it.

I loved the characters! I loved that Valerie stood up for her beliefs and I enjoyed her sassy personality. I truly liked Kyle, who despite his bad boy image and attitude was not bad at all! Dialogue was brilliant and the supportive characters were fun and added a lot to the story.

With that said, the plot was a tad too sweet for me. It was well written and I did enjoy it a lot, but there were parts where the story was too unreal and too cheesy. The idea of the book is good, but when you consider the fact that the average age for getting married is close to 30 years in Europe, then I have difficulties of buying the concept of remaining a virgin until that age. Young people are too curious simply. :)

Vi is for Virgin is an enjoyable read and I would recommend it for moms who have teenager girls at home!
