Summary:

Andrew Wrangles has a decision to make. His best friend Sothum, a philosophical and financial genius, has just died and left him a choice in his will: ten million dollars or a sealed envelope.

Andrew's wife Cheryl doesn't see this as much of a choice. She wants Andrew to take the money, and what little patience she has for his speculating about what could be worth more than ten million dollars is wearing thin very quickly.

But as Andrew digs deeper into the secret life that Sothum lived, he finds more questions than answers. Does the envelope contain the fate of a vanished mutual friend? The answer to a terrible cosmic riddle? The confession to a crime? Is Sothum just playing a final private joke? Or has Andrew become a pawn in a game--a game that Sothum died playing against a bigger opponent than Andrew can imagine?

My review:

The blurb of the Speculation was very promising and I made a quick decision that this is a book I want to read. It was a good choice! Speculation by Edmund Jorgensen was well written and had very likable characters and the plot asked a rhetorical question: To be or not to be?

Regarding the plot and characters:

Andrew Wrangles' friend leaves him with a choice: 10 million dollars or an envelope. The choice seems very easy, but everything is not like it looks. The story develops when Andrew starts to go through three boxes with paper and digs himself into a mystery which he sees also as a philosophical challenge.

The story is woven with flashbacks from the past and whatever Andrew finds, the bigger the mystery grows. There are four main characters in the story and they support each other while the story continues. I enjoyed the characters who were fascinating and well-written.

The only challenge I faced while reading the Speculation was the philosophical background of the story and the main character Andrew. There were too many speculations for me. I think I personally would have made the easy choice. It brought more surprises to the story than I expected.

Generally:

It was a fascinating mystery and the author did an excellent job with the characters. Definitely a good book for mystery readers!

5 Flowers!
4 stars.

Thanks goes to Novel Publicity and to the author who provided me with the review copy!

  3. Thank you for this opportunity and for your review! When I first saw this book on March 12, 2012, I knew it was a must read. The description grips you and pulls you in without any hesitation or mercy.

As for your personal review....THANK YOU! I was afraid to read on, as I am with many reviews, because anyone who knows me, knows I don't like spoilers of any kind! Not a single word, show of emotion or otherwise, lol. *covers ears, closes eyes and hummms loudly when people talk about a book I want to read and they go on and on and on about all that happened, Grrrr, lololol* I'm a bit odd like that, but it's really just to keep my reading experience as my own images as opposed to what others say or show. With that said, your review was just enough to solidify what I knew...that I want to read this book and you made me even more interested!! Also, you said it all perfectly with no spoilers :D Very cool! Thank you very much for your review and this opportunity.

Side Note many are becoming aware of: I am a total ♥Cover Love♥ reader and display my faves face out wherever I can on shelves! This is such an awesome cover!! xD Many may fault me on that, but I don't judge a book by the cover alone. This one just happens to have an amazing blurb and cover! Best of both worlds! Thank you :)

  5. This sounds like a very interesting book. I don't think I know of anyone that would take the envelope, LOL. I would have just taken the 10 million and run.
